16.3 Railings: Glass Panels in a Wood Frame

Glass panels installed in a wood frame offer a very attractive alternative to typical wood balusters. Glass panels are ideal where you do not want the view from the deck obscured.

Tempered glass panel in a wood railing frame doesn't obscure the view from the deck.

Notes:

  • Recommended wood is structural grade Western Red Cedar.
  • Glass is 6mm tempered glass.
  • Design Live Loads:
    • Top Rail, Horizontal - 50 PLF or 225 lbs. Conc. Load
    • Top Rail, Vertical - 100 PLF
    • Glass Panel - 113 lb. Horizontal Load
  • Secured top rail to posts using 4 #10x3" exterior wood screws.
  • Secure top and bottom frames to posts with 31/4 inch galvanized spiral nails.
